More akin to the spirit of the old TV series than most film voyages in this seemingly indestructible series, this chapter drops Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew on to a planet whose inhabitants, thanks to the qualities of the planetary rings, reach maturity but never grow old.
Naturally, there's trouble in paradise and a plan to relocate the colony for the benefit of the galaxy proves merely a cover for an ageing race of warriors with an agenda of their own.
The film is full of energy and has some prime bursts of action before slowing down slightly in the middle when the Enterprise's crew begin to feel the planet's various rejuvenating properties taking effect.
But it's serious affair as Picard is confronted with orders that undermine the decree, which says no Starfleet expedition may interfere with the natural development of other civilizations.
If he obeys, 600 peaceful residents will be forcibly removed from their remarkable world. If he disobeys, he risks his Starship, his career and his life. The future of the galaxy, and the survival of a race, depend on an act of rebellion.
