Bill (Gregory's Girl) Forsyth's comedy-drama is brave and offbeat, but ultimately unsuccessful and it took a dive at the box-office. Robin Williams stars in a portmanteau movie about a struggling everyman called Hector over five periods of history from the Bronze Age to modern-day New York. Playing a cave man, a Roman slave, a medieval traveller, a 17th-century Portuguese aristocrat and a New Yorker, the appealing Williams certainly shows his versatility, and the classy cast just about keeps it watchable. But the project turns irritating when Theresa Russell goes into her quirkily pretentious narration (apparently added at a later date).
