Strange things are happening down at the village of Burkinwell, where people are falling out of a tree in pursuit of fairies. Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree never presented such problems for its climbers, but here the trouble seems to be that the 'victims' are eating bizarre flowers that not only accelerate their senses, enabling them to see the fairies that live in the tree, but prompt them to do silly things like trying to fly when they get up in its branches. The result is rather like a fey version of a Hammer horror film and men in white coats will come among you afterwards to remove anyone believing a word of it. Toby Stephens is the photographer who, still pining for the bride he lost on an Alpine honeymoon, proves easy prey for the fairies' alleged connections with the other world.
