Based on horror writer Dean Koontz's book, this is a polished supernatural mystery about subterranean evil out to eradicate mankind, as discovered by two sisters (Rose McGowan, Joanna Going) who arrive in a remote holiday ski resort to find its population dead or disappeared. Sheriff Ben Affleck and deputy Liev Schreiber may help, but of more use is professor Peter O'Toole, who believes in 'the Ancient Enemy' and knows just how evil this evil is... Some standard 'look behind you' horror tricks will make you jump, but, despite a screenplay by Koontz himself, plus the presence of veteran actor O'Toole and hot young stars Affleck and Schreiber, it's a strangely passionless film.
