The American swamplands don't often produce decent films but here's an exception. In a far from typical role, Oscar-nominated Peter Fonda is quietly effective as a beekeeper in the North Florida everglades, methodically creating barrels of high-quality honey while trying to cope with his two granddaughters - since his son was sent to jail for robbery and his daughter hi-tailed it out of town. There's a blossoming friendship for this withdrawn and embittered man in the form of a nurse (Patricia Richardson) who moves in across the way, but trouble re-enters Ulee's life when he gets a call from his son's partners-in-crime. The drug-filled daughter-in-law is with them and has blabbed about the robbery money her husband kept. Everyone ends up at Ulee's, but there's not as much violence as you might expect in a carefully worked climax. Not a great film, this - its dialogue isn't brilliant - but still offbeat entertainment with some telling moments.
