Brilliant sets and costumes can't disguise the fact that this is another laborious attempt to capture the magic of the Lewis Carroll book, to which only the Walt Disney cartoon has come close. All the human actors are encouraged to act in wildly exaggerated fashion: Ben Kingsley's caterpillar and Miranda Richardson's Queen of Hearts are jarringly unapproachable, but neither is as excruciating as Martin Short's Mad Hatter or as boring as Gene Wilder's Mock Turtle. Only Christopher Lloyd's White Knight approaches the low-key solemnity that all high lunacy requires. A big sit, too, for small bottoms, even in this shortened version.
