When troubled psychology student Chyna Shepherd (cult 'Indie' star Molly Parker) visits her friend Laura's farm she wakes up to an even worse nightmare. During the night local serial killer Edgler Foreman Vess (John C McGinley) has broken into the house and killed Laura and her parents. Chyna is left to pick up the pieces and soon, via an overheard conversation, discovers that Vess has a young girl held captive in his house. Odd, perhaps, but then when a film is adapted from the mind of horror master Dean Koontz anything goes. Chyna, therefore, sets out to rescue the girl and thus finds herself deeply embroiled in the killer's frightening world. It has some genuine scary moments (if not as many as the book) but takes its sentimentality a bit too far.
