Three New York college grads round off their Asian travels with a month in Penang on the Malay peninsula, where drugs, girls, sin and sand are all at hand. Two years later, two of them (Vince Vaughn, David Conrad) are informed by a lawyer (Anne Heche) that the third (Joaquin Phoenix), arrested as a drugs dealer, is days away from being hanged. There's a super script and fine acting (with Phoenix and Heche especially good) for this provocative, intelligent, hard-hitting story, tensely and pacily told, and topped off with a nerve-jangling ending.
