Beau Bridges finds a satisfying role in this engagingly weird black comedy cum political satire as a future governor of Idaho, who turns away a group of refugees and provokes a civil war, delighting a news network that tries to manipulate the situation to gain viewers. Joe (Gremlins) Dante's film is pretty sharp at times and mostly enjoyable, though at other times the satire is very obvious and laid on with a trowel. And so the movie does fizzle out in the final reel, outstaying its welcome. Still, Bridges, Dan Hedaya, as the news channel producer, and Phil Hartman, as the President, head a fine team that includes some splendid guest stars who help to paper over most of the cracks.
