This is the one about a child befriending an alienated adult but finally, through a freak happening, betraying him. We've seen it before, but this weird but sensitively handled movie set in deepest suburbia is extremely well performed by Sam Rockwell (as the man, a gardener) and Mischa Barton (as the child, a lonely girl). Director John Duigan makes the other characters so irritating that sympathies are rivetingly drawn to the central friendship. Packed with good scenes and quirky sexual touches, this holds the attention throughout and has a devastating ending. The wonderful Kathleen Quinlan plays the girl's mother.
