Marred by its lack of action and its repetition of similar scenes, this is a long-seeming Western set either side of World War Two. Returning from the conflict with money saved to buy cattle, serious-minded Pete (Billy Crudup) falls heavily for married Mona (Patricia Arquette), only to find her the mistress of best pal Big Boy (Woody Harrelson). Renewed attentions from Josepha (Spanish star Penélope Cruz) can't dampen Pete's lust for Mona. At the same time, he does reject the attentions of local cattle baron Jim Ed (Sam Elliott) and, with Big Boy, signs up with the fairer Mooney (James Gammon), while Big's brother Little Boy (Cole Hauser) sides with Jim Ed. The scene is surely set for some explosive action but, apart from a brawl at a dance, not much happens. Most of the cast get to stare moodily, but Arquette gives a deadeningly unconvincing performance that makes it difficult to see why half the town has a yen for her. Stunning widescreen lensing only emphasises the film's slowness.
