A clan of gypsy con-men is at the centre of this strangely unengaging piece which is both about being attracted back to one's roots and tearing oneself away. Bokky (Bill Paxton) is the carefree traveller who sells bogus goods to anyone within range. Pat (Mark Wahlberg) is the outsider whose father quit the gypsy scamming racket; Pat, though, wants back in. Meanwhile, Bokky begins to doubt his way of life after becoming involved with a single mum (Miriam Margulies), but the film rapidly then develops into a thriller built round a king sting involving a fortune in forged banknotes. Basts form the past L Q Jones (as the gypsy boss) and Jo Ann Pflug (wordless as his wife) may spark the intertest a little fo film buffs. But the movie lacks sharpness and narrative drive and remains an unwelcome and unnecessary variation on a familiar theme.
