Private eye Nicolas Cage is called to the home of a newly-dead millionaire whose widow has found a reel of old 8mm film that seems to show a woman actually being killed.
Gratuitously vicious, the film concentrates on excesses and extravagances instead of the pacing of its plot and any grip on reality.
The first hour runs well as a fascinating detective yarn, but then the movie gets far too weird and sluggish.
