Ralph Fiennes is thrilling in the part he was born to play - Pushkin's doomed romantic hero - Eugene Onegin, who loves and loses the lovely Tatyana Larin. Liv Tyler plays her beautifully, too, making the transition from unrequited young lover to mature lady with style and authority. This sumptuous, gorgeous-looking production, filmed on snowy St Petersburg locations, is a family affair, with Ralph's sister Martha directing and his brother Magnus composing the music. It's a credit to all of them that the movie is such a heart-rending treat and a credit to the wealth of British acting talent (Toby Stephens, Harriet Walter) that it's delivered with so much emotion and conviction. Splendid.
