A road movie in the truest sense, this is a lyrical account of a true-life 300-mile journey made by pensioner Alvin Straight across America on a motorised lawnmower. Keen to see his estranged brother after the latter has a stroke, Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), unwilling to take a coach and unable to drive a car because of poor eyesight, decides a mower's the man for the job, towing a trailer behind. In some ways slightly off, in others this journey is a celebration of rural America, its farmlands and its better values. The film's pace is about as slow as Alvin's mower, but it does build a persuasive picture, made up of small incidents, and moral lessons taught by Alvin to those who cross his path.
