Echoes of Thelma & Louise as mother Adele (Susan Sarandon) and teenage daughter Ann (Natalie Portman) take to the road from their quiet small town to seek the good life in glitzy Beverly Hills. It's dreamer Adele, tired of her husband, who wants to go; feet-on-the ground Ann is far from keen, having to leave all her friends. Beverly Hills, naturally, has its unglamorous side, and that's where mom and daughter land up. Sarandon is on good form as the mom ever chasing dreams (and a new man), while Portman is equally strong as the sensible Ann in this bitter-sweet, predictable but quite involving mother-and-daughter tale.
