Patrick Bergin is neatly cast as a gravely heroic patron saint, Patrick, in this polished, good-looking but historically questionable TV biopic. Understandably, it tries to be more of a swashbuckling adventure than a religious lesson. Top-heavy with such Brit favourites as Alan Bates, Susannah York and Malcolm McDowell, the cast heroically ploughs through the sometimes shaky dialogue, obviously relishing the unusual work. The script is certainly informative, but it would have been wiser to stick to the known facts. The result would have been just as enjoyable, but better for questioning viewers. Just in case you're wondering: yes, McDowell is the villain again, the wicked Bishop Quentin.
