This is solid entertainment from director John Sayles. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, impressively doing all her own country-style singing, plays an Alaska-based chanteuse saddled with a teenage daughter and in the process of leaving her latest lover. She begins a new relationship with a taciturn ex-fisherman (David Strathairn) haunted by the memory of two men who died in his sinking boat. It looks like a new start for both of them until his brother (Casey Siemaszko) takes them on his boat for a fateful meeting with some 'business associates'. Despite the usual Sayles slowness, this is largely absorbing stuff with some touching moments.
