Steve Prefontaine was a great long-distance runner who was amazingly successful in the US and was tipped to win Gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. This docu-drama by Hoop Dreams director Steve James charts his short life (tragically, he died in a car accident at the age of 24), with Jared Leto strong in the lead role as the at-first arrogant yet determined runner, slowly growing to maturity. The track scenes are better handled than some of the rest, with real footage from the Olympics interspersed with film action, making it an interesting study in the highs and lows of an athlete's life.
