Once more onto the base: here's Kevin Costner's third baseball movie, in which he plays a legendary 40-year-old pitcher with a gammy hand and a reluctance to commit to long-suffering, on-off girlfriend Kelly Preston. Impossibly strung out, the film's great length destroys all potential tension. There's one more big game (against the New York Yankees) to provide Costner's Last Stand, while Preston prepares to storm off to London: we won't tell you how it all ends, but in the face of such average performances and indifferent scripting, it scarcely seems to matter.
