Demented is right. No wonder it took director John Waters nearly three years to get the financing for this foul-mouthed black comedy about a punk underground film maker (Stephen Dorff) who, with his crew, kidnaps a glamorous film star (Melanie Griffith) to feature in his anarchic, anti-mainline film. He gradually brainwashes her into his way of thinking, a la Patricia Hearst (Hearst herself takes a supporting role), getting her to do rooftop jumps and setting her hair alight in the cause. There's room for fun here, but it's so flatly directed by Waters that hardly any emerges - just lots of shouting and misdirected energy.
