Known primarily as a documentary maker with his partner Fenton Bailey, the duo made their feature debut with the biopic Party Monster.
Chronicling the life of New York disco kingpin Michael Alig, it starred former child star Macaulay Culkin as the doomed mover and shaker.
Originally co-members of the band The Pop Tarts they branched out into movies specialising in the both high and lowbrow culture, including Channel 4's Manhattan Cable.
Drop Dead Gorgeous, their documentary about HIV comedian Steve Moore, won a Cable Ace Award and they followed this up with the The Real Ellen Story about the coming out of Ellen Degeneres.
In Britain, they made the Channel 4 series Pornography: The Secret History of Civilisation and VH1's From The Waist Down told the story of music and sex.
After Party Monster, the 2005 documentary feature Inside Deep Throat delved into the impact the 1972 porn film had on popular culture.
