Whilst this abrasive military drama certainly marks a change of pace for director Joel Schumacher, whose entire filmography seems to have been made of glossy, vacuous turkeys like Dying Young, 8MM and Batman & Robin, its distinctiveness proves to be only skin deep. Shot entirely with handheld video cameras, the film has the look and feel of a gritty documentary as it charts the tale of a new recruit (Colin Farrell) drafted into the US Army and sent to a brutal Louisiana boot camp in 1971, who slowly begins to instigate a rebellion against the sadistic regime. But once you've wiped away all the dirt, blood and sweat, all you're really left with is yet another indictment of the dehumanising nature of military training, populated entirely by stock characters spouting the usual homilies and clichés.
