'This is ludicrous. I can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone,' complains a balding Billy Zane, although as soon as someone mentions The Quartermass Institute, he should have smelled a rat. Billy's wife and daughter perished in a bizarre plane crash months earlier, but, after mystery girl Gloria Reuben turns up taking snaps of their gravestones, hyper-active bad guys chase her off, and mysterious callers ask Zane to meet them at Grimes Coffee House, our hero begins to think someone may have survived the apocalyptic crash. As long as the film stays dark and enigmatic, it's fairly fine (if very nasty) , but, once the plot kicks in, things get too silly, the villains become comic caricatures and our interest starts to slacken. And you know no one's really going to tell Zane anything before being bumped off - at least not until we get to part two of what was originally a TV mini-series.
