Whether The Lord of the Rings is entirely true to Tolkien's book is neither here nor there.

We are not discussing a novel; we are discussing a film, one that looks spectacular, is packed with action and very well acted.

The story tells of a perilous journey by Frodo, the hobbit (Elijah Wood) and his companions to return a magical ring.

The ring, which has the power to plunge the world into evil, must be taken to its place of origin and be destroyed.

Peter Jackson's film - the first of a trilogy - is both ambitious and a labour of love.

Its creation of a world inhabited by mystical creatures such as hobbits, elves, wizards and dwarves is undoubtedly successful.

It is sumptuous - if perhaps over-violent for the under-tens - and splendidly played.

Of particular note are Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen (as a wizard), Ian Holm (another hobbit), Viggo Mortensen (a human knight) and Cate Blanchett (an elf queen).

As Tolkien was once to have said: badly written, no story, no character depth. I agree. It's about a bunch of people walking - not doing much, just walking. If I wanted to watch a good film about walking I'd watch Walkabout. And the ring - Frodo can shove it up his own. The film is bad, the direction is bad - I could have done better job directing my cat to play Frodo and my dog as Sam. Would of made more sense. At least people would understand it. There is only one trilogy and that's Star Wars.

With a cast of such brilliant actors as Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood, I thought the first of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy would be great, but it most certainly wasn't! I didn't understand the story at all and, although the actors in it lived up to my expectations, this was probably one of the most boring films I've ever seen! The LOTR series won an exceptional amount of awards but I definitely prefer it's rival book-turned-film Harry Potter.

I have read The Hobbit & LOTR & watched all 3 films several times yet I am not bored of it. The films are well cast and tell the story exceptionally well, (with a little bit of artistic license). I disagree with others who say the film is too lengthy and wordy. Considering the book took 12 years to write and is loaded with characters and Middle Earth history, the films have a lot to live up to. Do they do the books justice? Oh yes!
