New Zealand actor Sam Neill inherits Peter Finch's famous role as the charming but doomed 19th century highwayman Captain Starlight in this feature-length version of a drama originally broadcast in Australia as a three-part mini-series. Even so, the paces remains leisurely. Co-directors Ken Hannam and Donald Crombie make the most of colourful and unfamiliar locations, so there's plenty for the eye to feast on while the rambling plot unfolds.
