A Western that reverses all the traditions. Audience sympathy is invited for the outlaw (Bruce Dern), although he has shot a sheriff. And the marshal (Kirk Douglas) who heads the posse in pursuit is seen as a man consumed by ambition for high office. The bandit (Dern) ultimately buys off all the members of the posse but one. It's an unusual action film that nearly works. One never quite believes it all, but Douglas's direction, coupled with tight editing, almost suspends our disbelief, even if Douglas is bested in the acting stakes by Dern's steely scoundrel.
