John Mortimer adapted Vladimir Nabokov's novel for this love story, featuring two of the British cinema's most romantic young leads. Irina Brook, who has starred in Captive and The Girl in the Picture, plays the title role, while Cary Elwes, who has since been seen to good effect in The Princess Bride and Glory, is her lover Ganin. The 1920s Berlin settings, and the shabby hotel in the midst of them, are recreated with care, but the results lack any sense of full-blooded passion.
