Dennis Hopper's heady mixture of drugs, incest, masochism and nihilism is a paean to punk five years before Sid and Nancy. Its central character is a leather-tough 15-year-old, fiercely played by Linda Manz from Days of Heaven and The Wanderers. Hopper himself plays her horrendous ex-convict father; this film is a merciless portrait of a doomed and joyless section of American's population that few directors would have dared to make.
