Ry Cooder's haunting guitar music sets the mood and the pace of a film that is fascinating, dramatic, amusing and touching by turns. As the man found wandering in the Mojave Desert, refusing to say a word, the laconic Harry Dean Stanton shows how well he could have handled leading roles long before this if he had been given the chance. The film is very well made, terrifically acted, flawlessly photographed and... well... a bit boring, especially towards the end.
