This film, which started director Brian de Palma on an eye-catching orgy of violence and suspense that, to date, has included 'Carrie', 'The Fury', 'Blow Out' and 'Mission Impossible', is a cheeky and at times stomach-churning rock-music remake of 'Phantom of the Opera'. That diminutive dynamo of the pop world, Paul Williams, not only stars as the megalomaniac impresario Swan, who callously steals the hero's songs, but also wrote the music and lyrics for the film himself. Among the minor credits, you'll notice the name of Sissy Spacek, taking time out from acting, as set decorator. Her real-life husband Jack Fisk was production designer on this extraordinary film.
