Much acclaimed on its first appearance in America, this factually based film deals with a custody battle between divorced parents on the grounds that the mother is homosexual. The compelling story, admirably treated, is a sensitive exploration of whether being a lesbian takes away a woman's right or, for that matter, her ability and need to be a parent. Basically it deals with the conflict between cultural morality and individual love and affection. A strong cast is headed by Gena Rowlands in the central role, Jane Alexander as her lesbian friend, Ned Beatty as a lawyer, Clu Gulager as the father, Bonnie Bedelia as the woman's attorney, and Keith Mitchell as the son.
