Filmgoers may remember Les Diaboliques (also known as Diabolique or The Fiends), the French film which seemed such a frightener when it first appeared in the Fifties. This is an American television remake of that famous film, with Miss Weld and Joan Hackett in the roles originally played by Simone Signoret and Vera Clouzot. It is set, as before, in a house which has been turned into a boys' school and concerns a murder plot which leads to various twists and bizarre developments - and a surprise climax. Those who know the original may be intrigued to see what American film-makers have done with it, while those unfamiliar with the French film can be sure they are in for a good thriller. This version was directed by John Badham, who went on to make Saturday Night Fever and more recently Blue Thunder and WarGames.
