Director Joseph Losey's answer to Last Year in Marienbad; it's only his direction that makes this puzzle picture an occasionally fascinating, if too often ludicrous cinematic exercise. Certainly, he has little help from the screenplay. In fact, it's hard to tell which is more trite - the film's script, or the pulp books written in the attic by author Michael Caine while downstairs he is losing his wife (Glenda Jackson) to narcotics-smuggling gigolo Helmut Berger. Or is he? That's just one of the riddles you have to tackle. The background music by Richard Hartley is some of the loveliest heard in a British film for quite a while, and may even keep you awake.
