Don Knotts, a bumbling, 'nervous' American comedian who shot to fame on television, was so good in his early films - Move Over, Darling and The Incredible Mr Limpet - that Universal decided to build a whole series of big colour comedies around him in the late Sixties. This one is a remake of the Bob Hope/Jane Russell classic The Paleface, with Knotts as Jesse Heywood (Painless Potter in the original) and the personable Barbara Rhoades rather good value in the Calamity Jane part, here called Bad Penny. Movie veterans Don 'Red' Barry, who has a fine time as a fake vicar, and Jackie Coogan, the former child star, fill the villains' shoes with easy skill.
