Roger Corman's body-strewn Prohibition era mob movie takes its gangsters too seriously, and offers few genuine thrills. It pays meticulous attention to period detail, but there is no one to identify with, making this bleary-eyed at the feud between gangsters Al Capone (a miscast Jason Robards) and Bugs Moran (Ralph Meeker), both trying to control the lucrative American vice racket, as cold as a gun barrel. Film fans can have fun picking out such familiar faces as Bruce Dern, John Agar and Jack Nicholson (in a tiny, one-line role as Gino the hitman).
