Marathon tear-jerker about American servicemen in love with Japanese girls at the time of the Korean War, and the sometimes tragic consequences. Marlon Brando puts on a convincing Southern States accent, and develops his character nicely. But acting honours went to Red Buttons, previously known only as comic actor, and Miyoshi Umeki as the Japanese girl he marries. Both players deservedly won Oscars. The film also took Academy Awards for art direction and sound recording, and deserved one which it did not get - for the very high quality Technicolor photography by Ellsworth Fredericks. The atmosphere is authentic and the story wholly absorbing.
