Using a constantly prowling camera to immerse the audience in an atmosphere of impending menace, director John Carpenter expertly cranks up the suspense from the familiar situation of a female (crisply played by Lauren Hutton) terrorised by the taunts of an unknown assailant. Alfred Hitchcock himself would not have been ashamed of the nerve-straining results.
