A modest, low-key tale of the supernatural that's most notable as an early indication of Steven Spielberg's developing talent as a director. Coaxing creditable performances from an experienced cast, Spielberg follows the Hitchcock blueprint for maximum audience involvement and manipulation by using subjective camera angles and edge-of-the-seat editing. And the Master himself would surely have approved of the manner in which the eerie goings-on are made to seem even creepier by being set in the rustic sunny splendour of the Pennsylvania countryside.
