Amazingly, this comedy of manners directed by French master Claude Chabrol - better known for his suspense films - has never been shown in this country's cinemas. The script, co-written by Chabrol himself with Norman Enfield, provides some biting insights into what the director patently considers a parasitic Parisian upper middle-class, which he gets the chance to examine through the adventures of an American (played in bewildered fashion by Bruce Dern) who marries into the French aristocracy. A fine supporting cast includes Curt Jurgens, Stephane Audran (Chabrol's real-life wife), Charles Aznavour, Sydne Rome, Maria Schell and Jean-Pierre Cassel. A curiosity from a director seemingly unsuited to the material. English-language version.
