William Friedkin, director of The French Connection and The Exorcist, made this 21 million dollar remake of the famous suspense movie, the first version of which starred Yves Montand in the role now grittily played by Roy Scheider. The remainder of the characters remain less well developed than in the original, which so entrapped us in following the fortunes of the four men desperate enough to undertake a suicidal journey with a cargo of nitro-glycerine along the dangerous jungle and cliffside roads.
