On paper, the concept of a homage to François Truffaut's Jules and Jim must have seemed a non-starter, with Michael Ontkean and Ray Sharkey so in love with the French film that they model their personal relationships on its two male characters. On the screen, however, it works surprisingly well, thanks to charming and unforced performances by Ontkean and Skarkey and by Margot Kidder as the third person in their decade-long ménage à trois. Writer-director Paul Mazursky infuses the film with a nice line of humour, wth the occasional satirical bite and Sven Nykvist's colour photography gives the whole affair an attractive gloss.
