The view of the future propounded in Henry Livings' stage play Eh? was a fantastic and surreal one whose sideways look at life was admirably suited to the artificiality of a proscenium presentation. The film's greater reality tends to rob the original of some of its wilder flights of fancy but there is still much to admire in Peter Hall's first film, notably David Warner's engaging performance as a man more concerned with raising hallucinogenic mushrooms than with the more mundane aspects of his job in a power station. Cilla Black has her moments as Warner's fiancee, as does David Waller. Hall's direction is suitably Sixties-style flash and frenzy, abetted by the fine cinematography of Gil Taylor.
