War-film fans will like this vivid action film about the Battle of the Bulge, and of American troops fighting against huge odds towards the end of World War Two in Europe. The strong vein of humour is very welcome, Van Johnson gives one of his most winning performances in the lead, and director William A Wellman loses no chance to make real human beings out of the characters on the battlefield. He is helped by a talented supporting cast that includes Ricardo Montalban, Richard Jaeckel, Jerome Courtland, Marshall Thompson, Don Taylor, James Whitmore, Denise Darcel, Leon Ames and James Arness.
