As TV productions of Nazi repression go, this one, directed by the amazingly consistent Jack Gold, belongs right up there with Holocaust and Playing for Time. Its drama aches with intensity, and Reginald Rose's powerful teleplay is his best script for ages. The long story is strikingly well organised by writer and director and leading players Alan Arkin, Joanna Pacula and Rutger Hauer immerse themselves in their roles. There are some shocking moments as well as some exciting ones, but the upbeat ending - complemented by a coda dealing with what happened to the survivors of the extermination camp depicted in this film - enables the story to climax on a strong emotive surge.
