Interesting and at times exciting story of a poor-born ski-ace trying to win an Olympic gold. The film has excellent colour photography on and off the ski slopes. Robert Redford not only set up the production company for the film, but did most of the dangerous downhill racing himself. His character is such a cold fish, though, that we rarely care what's going to happen to him in the end. Still, with the help of skiers holding cameras instead of sticks, director Michael Ritchie gives us some tremendously exciting action scenes, and the feeling of tension on Olympic finals day is well caught too. One run down those icy slopes at hair-raising and, maybe, neck-breaking speed, is worth all the unecessarily long pauses in the dialogue.
