Star-studded film based on Hemingway's `Nick Adams' stories about the wanderings of a youth in search of life. Outstanding of the guest stars is Paul Newman as a has-been boxer, called The Battler. Newman's puffy make-up renders him almost unrecognisable, and his groans and grunts are done in masterly fashion. Michael J Pollard plays the hero's partner on the road, and other guest stars include Corinne Calvet, Dan Dailey, Arthur Kennedy, Eli Wallach and Ricardo Montalban.
