Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper again. Despite a stellar cast, the real star of this gaslit chiller is production designer Harry Pottle, who creates narrow, grimy streets, vaguely welcoming taverns, gaunt wharves and battered Victorian slums with all the flair of the old Hollywood. The film itself does its job well as a baffling thriller until the superfluous last half-hour.
