Unusual Western, oddly reminiscent of Oliver Reed's The Trap. Clark Gable, radiating sincerity, gives one of his best performances as the rugged trapper, and Maria Elena Marques, who only made one other Hollywood film, is enchanting as the Blackfoot Indian girl he marries. There's a bit too much talk at the expense of action, annoying even in this short a film, especially when the breathtaking Rocky Mountain scenery, sparklingly shot in Technicolor by William Mellor, calls for movement as a complement to its rugged splendour. The voice of the narrator is another MGM familiar: it's that of Howard Keel.
