Boldly going where few men would have dared to tread, writer-director Peter Hyams has fashioned an entirely respectful sequel to Stanley Kubrick's influential science-fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. Overcoming the slight hiccup of its wordy scene-setting opening, 2010 develops into a fascinating space saga in its own right as American Roy Scheider (inheriting William Sylvester's role from Kubrick's film) joins a Russian team to solve the mystery of Discovery's disappearance. The tension between these reluctant colleagues is keenly felt and the state-of-the-art effects culminate in a climactic revelation that's as eerie as it is wonderful.
